Cinema, Theatre, and Why We’ve Forgotten How to Watch

All of humanity has had some sort of special connection with cinema.

Be it theatre originating as back as 2500 years or modern day Spiderman: Brand New Day.

Have you ever wondered what makes films so special, well to learn that we would have to learn about its originations. Performing arts or better known as theatres age back way before we could even track it, and why wouldn’t it? We humans sing or hum before we learn how to talk and dance around wiggle all day before we could learn how to walk.

The western theatre has its origins in the city of Athens, Greece, it constituted everything you could potentially imagine as a performing art, funerals to births, weddings to probably divorce idk if they had divorces, they didn’t i checked on historyandmyths.com but all in all they had performances for every literal thing.

It developed furthermore under the Roman Empire, the Romans were fairly modern, thriving, and diverse. They had Nude dances, acrobatics, singing, street performances, also not make this a history blog, theatre took its fair time to develop to reach at this point, where we watch dead ahh netflix paired with ofc the inevitable doomscrolling, where the lightings look so cold and pale, botoxed actors, painfully and obviously made by and for corporations. When ai starts writing your films and shows, you will not really be able to enjoy watching a new show ever again. It is because ai is not a creator the best you’re going to get from it is an amalgamation of previously loved shows, which when all mixed together turns feces.

Every form of art has its own way of speaking to us. Music through the frequency that scratches the right part of the brain, when needed. Dancing connects you to something beyond the measures of physical paraboles, drawing lets you wander around in your imagination and bring segments of it on canvas, in similar ways theatre or performing arts whether you are the performer or the viewer it ascends you to a different realm, a completely different sphere.

The thing about art or performing arts to be specific is, it is meant to be enjoyed wholly and not half assed with subway surfers running below. Theatres have been going on for ages and people have let themselves delve into the art, submerging themselves entirely.

It is only the modern times where we do not allow ourselves to be uncomfortable, we are so used to reels or games or literally anything in the background that we cannot sit with ourselves in periods of silence, and believe me i am not here just to blatantly bash gen-z we weren’t born this way, infact so many of us had the magical nostalgic childhood.

It is just that we are made to be like this, late stage capitalism i tell ya, that being said pls do not be that weird instagram prototype who blames everything on someone else, the damage is done bestie, but thats okay it can be undone, although time consuming, we will make sure it gets undone, continuing, everything we do, or don’t is made into a performance.

Do you even have a sense of aesthetic if you aren’t on pinterest, do you even read if you do not track your books on goodreads, do you even watch films if you aren’t on letterboxd, well don’t get me wrong i am on letterboxd and others as well, when i was in the theatre this last month to watch Project Hail Mary, pretty much all the phones were constantly up, a person while in the midst of the film was reviewing “FIVE STARS BEST FILM I’VE EVER WATCHED EASILY TOP 4” and i kid you not we weren’t even in the middle of the film yet.

True admiration of art is sitting with it. No matter how uncomfortable the silence gets, sitting with it.

Also diva while we are at the topic, maybe wearing red chequered shorts is just wearing red chequered shorts, it doesn’t necessarily add to my “whimsy” WHICH ISN’T EVEN A PROPER WORD BTW, its supposed to be whimsical.

Despite the performative matcha carrier [ notice how i do not say drinker, bc if you like it you like it diva although questionable ] book in hand by camus but hasn’t even read Cinderella yet people we witnessed, this year was indeed a generational run for the cinema, the theatre gods must be happy!

Do let me know if you want me to get into the economics of of cinema, but honestly there isn’t much to cover other than the fact that films cost money, hit they make, flop they don’t make remotely as much, we already have so many articles for dat, i initially did plan to cover it though when i researched i found out there isn’t as astonishing much new, it is the good ol money money money.
